LESSONS
Welcome to the Nick Scheuble Drum Studio!
Over the years, I have found that a need exists to train drummers in areas that most schools neglect. Historically, drummers are taught drum rudiments, hand technique, reading, coordination, independence and so on. What is often missing is the development of the ear, understanding of harmony and song form, and a working knowledge of the piano keyboard. While these things seem to not be directly related to drumming, especially non-pitch specific instruments, they are nevertheless the key elements that allow drummers to make correct choices while performing and support and stimulate a group much more effectively.
|
Too often than not, drummers may be in a situation, perhaps at a rehearsal, and not be able to contribute the way they would like to in the development of the music because they simply do not understand harmony and that which lies outside of the realm of drumming. They wait patiently for the other musicians to finish talking about the chords and so on until they can play again. That isn’t too much fun!
My teaching methods are designed to avoid this and develop a more musically informed drummer. Yes, I teach drumming for drumming sake as well. After all, it is the drums and not some other instrument that has brought you here! And yes, you can count on being taught proper technique, reading, coordination and all which is drum related. But at a certain point, especially as the student's desire to learn these things grow, I introduce an understanding of the piano keyboard, music theory and song forms, as well as instruction on how to play other interesting percussion instruments.
|
As such, my system is to give my students the necessary skills to pursue whatever music styles they choose. Many have become fine jazz drummers or rock drummers. Others may want to deal only with classical percussion and not drum set. I have had students go on to study at The New School, Queens College or “Jazz House Kids” as well as become studio and international performers. Two former students have independently performed at two separate Olympics (one having his music featured at the Beijing Olympics, and another performing live at The Sochi Olympics).
What’s important to know is that I welcome students of all ages, absolute beginners and professionals alike. I have over 30 years teaching experience (I started quite young!). I am currently on the music faculty at Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey and have been employed there for over ten years. In addition, I have taught as an adjunct professor at The County County of Morris in Randolph, New Jersey for over ten years. I have been an adjudicator many times for the NJAJE all-state finals and am part of the Vic Firth Educational Team.
