Exercise #9 The "Cirone" Shuffle

1/10/2016

Certain shuffle grooves place the hi hat (foot) on the last note of each 3 beat grouping. The ostinato played by the feet that I wrote here, makes use of this idea.

In developing an exercise that would help prepare you for the demands of improvising a  fill-in over this ostinato, I choose an etude from Anthony Cirone’s “Portrait in Rhythm".

Besides working on this exercise as a whole, it is a good idea to experiment with alternating between playing “time” and reading one or more measures of music to simulate a “fill-in”.

Please practice slowly, maintaining a steady groove and aim to make seamless transitions.
